Off to Cockatoo Island next week to see the Biennale (the part that has breath-taking installations not tedious German video art!)

These days, seeing red, black & white triggers mental imagery of none other than Jonathan Barnbrook's AMAZING identity work for the BOS. The conch shells, the scientific imagery, the custom fonts...magnifique!

Was fortunate enough to interview him when he visited UTS in May. An astute designer with an acerbic sense of humour. And talented, oh my god talented!

Sam: You’re not into the transparent communicator theory?

J: What I mean by that is that whether you like it or not your work has your personality and your prejudices and your likes and dislikes in it, and there’s not point trying to pretend it doesn’t. The transparent communicator was the theory before people had this phrase of socially aware design, and being accountable for what you do.

S: What’s your favourite letter?

What a strange, silly question. No, it’s R. Because it’s strong, and it’s very good to draw, and I like the tail of the R.

S: If anything, what have you taken out of your experience mentoring students from UTS?

One of the things is (that) you are very articulate students, and confident students, and you don’t see that at that many places. So that’s very positive. Apart from that, you’re all exactly the same, you take ages. You take two days to do something that should take ten minutes, and you never speak directly when you should, but that’s all part of the learning process. If you were all finished designers I’d be really worried, because that would mean you’d be over-confident.

So, in a way, we are perfect the way we are?

Yes, you said it, you’re all perfect the way you are.

If Avatar is good enough to inspire one of the undisputed luminaries of couture, then it should be good enough for all the unemotional, brainless doubters who called the "predictable storyline" excuse.

Pandora and all its beauty was made tangible once more in Gaultier's Spring Couture 2010 Collection.

Sci-fi was blended with the primitive as extreme corsetry and studs came up against feathers, tribal metallic jewellry, Amazonian tattoos, multi-plaited hairstyles and palm leaves.

Certain outfits erred on the kitsch side, thanks in part to Gaultier's initial inspiration-Mexican culture (think mariachis and floor length denim).

However Gaultier's sheer attention to detail, impeccable construction and usual tongue-in-cheek approach ensured that this was one exotic spectacle no resource-chugging human could ignore.

Arkansas-born hotstuff Beth Ditto lounges around in sartorial splendour with male model Blake in the Steven Klein-snapped editorial Size Zero.

Her threads were all specially commissioned for the shoot, with the designer list encompassing Yves Saint Laurent, Giles Deacon, Proenza Schouler, Prada, and Hussein Chalayan.

Visual references for the shoot are aplenty in the blogosphere.

Some have likened the style and content to B-grade classic Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!, while others see John Waters' X-rated Pink Flamingo (comparisons most likely due to Divine and Beth representing the curvy mamas... no shit-eating here!).

The comparison that takes the cake in my eyes is to the Andy Warhol/ Paul Morrisey epic HEAT.

There's no denying that there's a likeness between the man candies Blake and Joe Dellasandro, while Beth is definately a much better looking, more talented big girl than Pat Ast.

SYDNEY: Youth retailer General Pants Co has appointed brand entertainment agency Peer Group Media as a partner for the launch of a record label.

The launch of Major Label will see General Pants staff, supported by POS and digital marketing collateral, take on the role of talent scouts by searching up and coming music acts and submit them to the Major Label blog housed on the General Pants site.

"The program engages our staff and customers and puts General Pants Co. on the dance floor of the Australian music scene," said General Pants Co brand manager Jethro Lyons.

Peer Group Media will manage the overall campaign including creative, PR and artist liaison. It launches on 1 March.

I’m Sarah Larnach, and do all of the artwork for Ladyhawke. I was nominated for an A.R.I.A. for the Ladyhawke album artwork.

Excuse me for being blunt, but this is serious, and I am doing what I can to raise help.

My sister, Emily Sanson-Rejouis, her husband and 3 daughters (ages 5, 4 and 2) are in Haiti right now, and only Emily and the youngest child have been confirmed alive.

I am auctioning an original painting from the Ladyhawke album/singles for charity, to assist in Haiti.This is the first time a piece of artwork from my Ladyhawke work has come up for sale, so its a rare opportunity to help, and to own something that would normally be difficult to get your hands on. Pip Brown and Sarah Larnach will also sign a copy of the single (Paris Is Burning) and album where it appears, as well as writing a personal letter of thanks to the buyer.

The artwork is a watercolour painting of two cats.

Those peskily brilliant marketing and branding consultants at the Coolhunter Platinum have piqued my interest with an offer Cirque should not be able to refuse.

A Vegas show that offers "song-and-dance-and-splitz" such as its incumbents VIVA Elvis and the The Beatles LOVE will surely be eclipsed by a visually gorgeous and thematically resonant AVATAR SHOW.

Imagine Pandora made into flesh, not just for the eyes and ears to experience, but for the rest of the senses too.

I'm sure there'd have to be a heavy use of projectors since floating mountains & jellyfish-like wind seeds are hard to materially replicate, but this would then open up the possibility of a more interactive and immediate Cirque du Soleil show.

His style is infectious and unabashedly camp, drawing inspiration from pop culture and art world pioneers such as Keith Haring, Warhol and the Dadaists.

Even more interesting than the aforementioned gigs was his appointment to design liturgical robes for 5,000 priests, 500 bishops AND Pope JP II for World Youth Day in 1997.

The collection was to run by the theme of rainbows, which is the symbol of covenant between God and Noah in Noah's Arc.

De Castelbajac completed the task but felt it was necessary to inform the Pope that rainbows were indeed a prominent symbol for the gay community.

To this the Pope responded that no one had "copyright" of the rainbow and that was final.

And with that JP went on to praise JC proclaiming: "Young man, you have used colour as a cement of faith.”"

Independent Sydney-based design firm Effektive created these limited edition cassette badges after feeling nostalgia for the 80s & a mega genius brainwave.

The full range of cassette badge sets was exhibited as part of the ItsNiceThat 'Original Format' exhibition in the UK held in late 2008. They have also been featured in Web Designer Magazine and have been sold in limited editions all over the World.

So so fantastic music video for Miles Fisher's cover of This Must be the Place by the Talking Heads.

I hated American Psycho the film, while the book was meandering for half of the time, but for some reason I find this clip brilliant!

Maybe its because Fisher's impersonation of Christian Bale is uncanny and because a healthy layer of cheese is imbued upon the otherwise serious and vain film narrative.

Mexican culture is vibrant & highly celebratory, which is clearly evident in these Day of the Dead-inspired papier mache skulls that I made one wine-filled holiday day.

Day of the Dead is like Halloween, but goes for twice as long and involves more glitter, marigolds, food, prayer & remembrance.

One day I will partake, but for now bunny, red wine & flour glue that smells like cheese are fun substitutes.

I love love love last month's Oyster mag editorial titled Nu Clean.
Shot by Milo Mali, every shot tells a neon-brite "pop your eyes out" story that has a unique fashionista squatter theme.

The contrast between the girls' skin & the clothing's saturation is impeccable & their dainty yet playful demeanors are a perfect contrast to the uniform anorexic haughtiness displayed by most of their counterparts.

Also love that animated Spongebob kid oh so much!

Thank god for Oyster, we need a proper fashion bible in Australia because our Vogue sucks balls.

Big Rig Diner satisfies me

Big Rig Diner opened under the shoddy Oxford Street night space Ruby Rabbit in early July.

I ventured out there for Dinner #2 of the night (that's right 2 dinners yum yum) & I was taken to caramelised onion & melted brie food heaven.

Big Rig's niche market is the late night hipster crowd (eeew) dining scene, with its kitchens open from 6pm til late.

I ordered the Big Rig Dog (below) which satisfied with spicy sausage, awesome tomato chilli jam, caramelised onion and melted brie. The person in the Russian Princess hat sitting opposite me was so jealous, although their chilli dog was looking mighty fine with a wonky crown of mushy peas.

Will be back for the cherry pie and Jack Daniels chilli tortillas.

Hopefully these collages will come together later on in a zine about the female form, regarding issues such as the woman's body being public domain, immanent dissatisfaction with what one has (including the body) and the cultural view that the woman's body is meant to be like a machine-streamlined, interchangable, perfect.

As you can see this is an issue that I take very seriously, and through creating visually striking & Pop-inspired collages, the agenda can be pushed without being overbearing or too heavy for younger audiences.

Yay.

It's no secret that I adore Karen O.
She is all woman and all colourful

....And the colourful can be indebted to her fine taste and fashion designer friend Christian Joy.

Joy is cool.

She has no formal training in fashion, displays a love for costume over garment, contributed pieces to the Victoria & Albert Museum and scoffed at her "It Girl" status when it was first laiden upon her by Time Magazine in '03.

Her label is notably more black and white then her extravagent costumes for Miss Karen, but as she further establishes herself, I'm sure the nutter inside will be allowed to come out, just in time for her to begin stocking in Australia stores. That's right, there are none here:(

Kinder Surprise ads worked on me when I was a little kid innocently watching morning educational programs such as good ol' Postman Pat & Playschool.

Scrupulous as they were advertising their fattening wares to "I-gget-it-or-I'll-cry" kiddies such as myself, they've continued in the same vein and included some sweet trip-tacular Magic Mushroom figurines in their toy range.

I received mine last Xmas & had a good ol' laugh/smirk/"what's wrong with the world" moment.

But nonetheless I still want to make this 'shroom circle of love happen. If anyone has any of the other capped munchkins, my grotesuely fat carrier pidgeon named Maria will be more than qualified to take them off your hands and fly them to my glitter den in the west. Yay.

It is uncanny how much perfection is equated with the Disney Princesses.

They have clear skin, bright eyes, couture gowns, shiny hair, rich dads, a seemingly good heart and their Prince Charming down pat.

It's great to know then, that Dina Goldstein has created a photographic series titled "Fallen Princesses" which stirs a dash of realism into the "once upon a time" cake batter, to produce the "heavy and satisfying" rather than "light and fluffy" feeling upon consumption.

This is why Princess Jasmine is on the battlefront in the Middle East, why Rapunzel is a cancer patient clutching her enchanting locks, why Belle is getting botox in order to remain the "Beauty", and why Little Red Riding Hood has experienced the repercussions of carrying around a basket of food as a major hobby.

I love Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

The show only makes a little more sense than Mulholland Drive, and while there is 0% girl-on-girl action, rest assured it is a million times funnier.

Huge ups then to Jia Jam who made a salami and bacon shift as a Meatwad costume for her Aqua Teen Hunger Force Birthday party.

She used salami "because it was cheap", bacon "because it looked meaty", and sandwiched the delectable raw meats between a cotton wool shift and a clear vinyl sheet.

The meat dress took 6 hrs to make and was refridgerated up until just before the party started.

This kind of effort says "you're shit" to all those people who dress as themselves to costume parties.

You guys suck.

Back in the early 00's everyone used to sport a Julius or Chocolate Tiger Club tee/jumper/scarf/stockings/doll/keychain........stool ?

Now I can't even recall seeing a Paul Frank anything on the street for at least 2 years.

Quite sad considering the brand displayed such a playful approach to pop culture and fashion, and was an integral part of my early teenage years. I loved that shit.

In remembrance of the label's high time I've dug up from my teenage picture archives, some real gems.

A Waco Fish Taco wrapper, some cute desktop icons, a limited edition Elvis Presley wallet, a poster for the Kroq Weenie Roast, and an album cover designed for The Vandals.

visionare 56 solar is a limited edition publication dreamt up in tandem with the folks at calvin klein.

aside from being extravagent and beautiful its most striking asset is its ability to, using advanced printing technology,
colour upon exposure to light.

one can glance the publication in all its simplistic black and white glory indoors, then take it outside and watch the embroidery, case and photgraphy have colour run through its threads.

Words can not explain how in awe I am at Mitch Ansara's series of I Can Read Movies book covers.

I particularly love how each movie has been distilled into its symbols.

So with Blade Runner, the ongoing role of the Replicant's eyes is explored, in the Japanese Willy Wonka cover it's the golden egg weighing scenario; Jurassic Park, the mosquito in amber which contains yay, dinosaur DNA.

He clearly has a comprehensive understanding of the iconography and dynamics that each of the
movies possesses, and channels this otherwise cognitive information into some of the most striking and celebratory visuals I've ever seen in my life.

Why didn't I think of that!

On a lighter note, Kate Moss's latest batch of hotcakes for Topshop is stunning.

Feathers, sequins, beading, animal prints, sheer fabrics, red lips, super short cuts, ethnic inklings and effortless sex.

Other garments which aren't featured in the campaign but are beautiful and fanciful include this lemon yellow Deco-inspired dress.

This dull gold beaded flapper dress.

And it's only inevitable that tie dye jeans will be copied and pasted by money-making chain stores by the end of the year.

SOOOOO men no longer need to buy porn to get an eyeful of tit.

They're everywhere. Fucking magazine ads, billboards, editorials... photography that is amateur but is under the illusion that it is credible through use of "artsy, tasteful" tits.

And while I may be no prude, this little artsy boob-fest must come to an end....
for three reasons.

1. Because bare chests are becoming as utterly faddy as wet-look leggings, harem-fucking-pants and chain store leather jackets.
Their ubiquity demeans the female form, stripping it of its previous Renaissance mysticism.

2. Because every model is now being told to go topless by photographers/directors to get in on the action, yet they have horrible malnourished boobs and bodies
e.g. ABOVE! put it away Freha Beha Erichson !

3. Because young models are also being coerced to comply to these rules. Above is of 16 year old Sydney model Zippora Seven (@ Priscilla's of all laudable agencies!) in a bath tub and topless with a much older male model.

Within the atmosphere of "what the fuck", her agent, Priscilla Leighton-Clark, was quoted as saying:

“It’s wrong that our girl has appeared in a magazine exposing her breasts when she’s so young”.

A statement propounded by blog Fashion Copious, which I find necessary to explore is then:

"Would it have been okay with you if the same scene was shot with the young model's breasts under the water? We're pretty positive it would have been.
Which leads me to my...final question: who cares if her breasts are showing or not; shouldn't their real concern be that the young girl is sitting nude in a bathtub, to begin with? "

On that note, it's unrealistic to think that we'll spiral further down the ethical ladder and end up with pre-pubescent girls topless on covers (a la the Photo mag cover) due to 00's media-fuelled awareness of pedophilia.

Suffice to say, I get the the same disturbed and disgusted feeling upon viewing Zippora in the tub as I do when I look at the first image from Photo mag shot all those years ago.

Three words.
Put it away.

Think of the children.
